AN exhibition about Brisbane's poor and disadvantaged living in the city's boarding houses is sure to take the public out of their comfort zone.
The Board and Shelter exhibition involves 12 giant banners displayed in the foyer of the Brisbane City Hall. The banners feature photographs by Daniela Flynn and information, statistics and quotes gathered by radio journalist Hamish Sewell covering four Brisbane boarding houses – Anglican Women's Hostel in New Farm, Pindari Women's Hostel in Spring Hill, Franklin Court in West End and Green Meadow Court in Mt Gravatt. Brynhild plans to provide supported accommodation for people who have a need for this type of housing. The supported accommodation that is provided should be flexible and supported by a number of service providers and a continuum of support options. One of the key points to service options within supported accommodation is that people with a disability and older people should maintain their independence and have a level of self-determination. All supported accommodation should be tailored to individual needs and these needs should be in response to the wishes expresses by the resident.
Brynhild Investment Trust plans to establish a network of supported accommodation hostels throughout Brisbane. The directors are aware of the current accommodation climate and the lack of truly decent rental places for the disadvantaged.
